Waking on the Wrong Side of the Bed

Sarah hit the ground; hard. It felt like it was all happening in slow motion. She could feel her nose breaking, her teeth shattering, her eyes bursting in their sockets. She felt the sensation of the truck’s wheels rolling over her body. Time slowed to an even further crawl as the weight crushed her spine. The young woman spent hours in agony as the pressure caused her blood to slowly tear through her skin and spray across the road.

Sarah woke up with a start; her pyjamas and bedsheets were soaked in sweat. “What the fuck?!” She patted herself down to make sure her body was intact. What kind of crazy nightmare was that? She slapped the figure sleeping next to her. “Jess! Jess, wake up!”

The figure, Jess apparently, stirred. “What is, babe?”

“I just had the most fucked up dream. I fell and –”

“Shit!” Jess leapt out of bed. “Did you piss yourself?”

“What? No!” Then the smell hit Sarah’s nostrils. She had pissed herself. “I am so sorry!”

“It’s everywhere, Sarah!”

“It’s mostly sweat, I promise!” Sarah had never felt so embarrassed; all of this over a dumb nightmare.

Jess spent what remained of the night napping on the sofa, trying to sleep over the sound of the washing machine. Sarah sat at the kitchen, struggling to remember the nightmare; it had all but faded from memory.

———-

She awoke to the smell of bacon. Sarah sat up as a plate was placed in front of her. On it was a face; bacon for a smile, fried eggs for eyes and beans for hair.

“I’m sorry about last night.” Said Jess as she sat down with her own plate. “I totally overreacted. It’s not like you did it on purpose or anything.”

“No, but it was still such a childish thing to do.” Sarah played with her food. “How many twenty-three year olds do you know who wet the bed?” She angrily stabbed the yolk of her egg and immediately felt the pain of her eyes bursting in their sockets. She fell backwards onto the floor, clutching her face in pain.

“Sarah!” Jess ran over and knelt beside Sarah, trying to keep her still. “Sarah, talk to me!”

“My eyes!” Sarah shrieked.

Jess pulled Sarah’s hands from her face. There was no blood, no signs of harm at all; and while her girlfriend had her eyelids scrunched tight, she could clearly see the shape of Sarah’s eyes underneath.

“Your eyes are fine! I promise! Just open them.”

Sarah did so reluctantly. Everything was fine, just as Jess had said. She immediately started crying.

“Was this something to do with your nightmare” Jess cradled Sarah in her arms.

“I don’t know,” Sarah sobbed, “I can’t remember.” This was, however, only a half-truth. While Sarah couldn’t remember her dream, the immense pain of it was unforgettable.

“Maybe you should stay home today; call in sick.” Jess went to grab Sarah’s phone from the counter.

“No,” Sarah wiped her eyes. “I’m fine, really. I just need to get back into my routine.”

Jess looked at her, hesitantly, “If you’re sure?”

“Yeah. I’m sure.” Sarah smiled at her.

———-

Never underestimate how therapeutic a nice warm shower can be, thought Sarah as water ran down her naked body. The events of the previous night, as well as her ‘incident’ at breakfast felt so far away. In fact, she wasn’t even thinking about it anymore. Instead she was thinking about Jess, and how badly she wished she was in the shower with her right now. She opened the door of the shower cubicle and called out, “Hey, Jess?”

“What is it hun?” Jess called back.

“You busy? I, uh, I need you to scrub my back!”

Jess didn’t answer for a few seconds; Sarah could picture Jess mulling it over. Then she heard footsteps getting closer. Jess stepped into the bathroom, she was biting her lower lip. Sarah’s heart raced as Jess opened the shower door fully and slowly took the washcloth from the shelf. Sarah tilted her head playfully and turned slowly around. That was when she felt a sharp stinging pain on one of her cheeks. She spun around in time to see Jess whipping the washcloth at her a second time.

“The fuck!” Sarah massaged her rear.

Jess grinned. “The last time I ‘scrubbed your back’, we both ended up being an hour late for work. Now quit hogging the shower and go put some clothes on.”

Sarah stepped out and wrapped a towel around her skinny frame. “I hate you.”

“No you don’t.” Replied Jess as she undressed.

“Yeah…I know…”

———-

Sarah slipped the teal sundress over her underwear and put on her sandals. She made for the front door, grabbing her satchel on the way. “I’m off to work” She called out, “I love you!”

“Love you too!” Called Jess from the bathroom.

Closing the door behind her, Sarah put in her earbuds, cranked up the volume and walked down the street with a spring in her step; the shower had definitely helped. Unfortunately for Sarah, the music made her oblivious to the events taking place behind her. A small child broke free from his mother’s grip and made a beeline for the puppy on the other side of the road. The trucker driver saw him and swerved instinctively.

The truck mounted the pavement behind Sarah and, unable to brake in time, knocked her down. She hit the ground; hard. It felt like it was all happening in slow motion. She could feel her nose breaking, her teeth shattering, her eyes bursting in their sockets. She felt the sensation of the truck’s wheels rolling over her body. “It’s everywhere, Sarah!”

“It’s mostly sweat, I promise!” Sarah had never felt so embarrassed. All this over a dumb nightmare. She went to climb out of bed so that she could begin stripping it. “Fuck!” She screamed as she froze in place.

Jess went from angry to concerned in a heartbeat, and hurried over to her. “What is it? Are you okay?”

“It’s my back,” Sarah wheezed, “It’s killing me!”

“Look,” Jess put her hands on Sarah’s sides and lowered her back into bed, “I know no one likes to lay down in their own piss, but just take it easy for a sec. You probably just pulled something, I’ll grab the aspirin.” Jess left the room and returned a few moments later with a glass of water and two small tablets. “Take these, I’m going to call your work and let them know you won’t be in today.”

“No, hold on.” Sarah called Jess back into the room before swallowing the pills. “I’ll be fine after a shower. The heat will ease my muscles a little.”

———-

Sarah could not have been more wrong; the shower wasn’t helping the slightest. Standing upright felt like an endurance trial.

“You want me to scrub your back?” Jess called from the other room.

“No thanks!” Sarah winced as she replied, “I’m just getting out now anyway.” Sarah knew she should take it easy, but she couldn’t afford to take any time off work. She switched off the shower and grabbed a towel.

———-

“Ouch!” Sarah yelped aloud as Jess pulled a sweater down over her.

“Stop squirming and it will hurt less!” Replied Jess as Sarah’s head popped out from the top of the sweater. “You sure you’re okay to go to work?”

“Yeah, yeah. I’m fine. I just took few more aspirin.” Sarah stood and grabbed her satchel. “Anyway, you should go take a shower; you’re going to go be late.”

Jess kissed her on the forehead. “Okay babe. But you call me if you need anything, okay?”

Sarah nodded.

———-

Closing the door behind her, Sarah put in her earbuds, cranked up the volume and walked down the street slowly and painfully. Behind her, a young boy spotted a puppy on the other side of the road and tore away from his mother to get and pet it. A truck, too close to brake, swerved without thinking onto the pavement. In a split second, Sarah was beneath the heavy vehicle.

She hit the ground; hard. It felt like it was all happening in slow motion. She could feel her nose breaking, her teeth shattering, her eyes bursting in their sockets. She felt the sensation of the truck’s wheels rolling over her body. Time slowed to an even further crawl as the weight crushed her spine. The figure, Jess apparently, stirred. “What is, babe?”

“I just had the most fucked up dream. I was falling and –”

“Shit!” Jess leapt out of bed. “Did you piss yourself?”

“What? No!” Then the smell hit Sarah’s nostrils. She had pissed herself. “I am so sorry!”

Jess ran over to her and took hold of Sarah’s face. “Forget that for a second! Jesus Christ!”

“Wait, what’s wrong?” Sarah asked, confused.

“Your nose is bleeding and…your eyes as well?” She grabbed a tissue from Sarah’s bedside table and wiped her girlfriend’s face. “It looks like it’s stopped now though but, fuck, what makes your eyes bleed?”

Sarah said nothing. Something about all of this felt terrifyingly familiar.

“Maybe we should go to A&E?” Jess looked at her sympathetically, “Couldn’t hurt to get you checked out?”

“Yeah. Yeah. Okay.” Sarah was still a little spaced out.

Jess went to grab her phone. “I’ll call work, you get yourself cleaned up a little.”

———-

Sarah felt relieved as she splashed cold water on her face. She felt absolutely fine. Neither her eyes nor her nose was hurting. Still, if getting checked out would make Jess feel better, then who was she to argue? She grabbed her toothbrush, smeared on some paste and began to brush vigorously for a few minutes. When she finally spat into the sink, the mixture of saliva and toothpaste was joined by three teeth, which plinked quietly as they hit the basin. Sarah ran her tongue along the inside of her mouth. There were gaps in the back where teeth should have been. What the fuck was happening to her? She ran out of the room. “Come on Jess! Let’s go!”

The two women left the house and began walking down the street towards Jess’ car. It was then that they both heard the sound of a horn beeping behind them. They turned just in time to see a truck speeding down the pavement.

“Shit!” Jess screamed as she jumped to one side. Sarah wasn’t fast enough. She fell to the ground, hitting the back of her head, and watched helplessly as one of the trucks heavy tyres crushed her legs. It was like it was all happening in slow motion, but she was completely aware of what was happening. The pain was unbearable and she tried to pull away, but her body wouldn’t move. Hours passed. The wheel had reached her chest now. The lower half of Sarah’s body had been destroyed beyond repair, and she had spent those hours in agony. More time passed. The wheel had just crushed her lower jaw. It felt like the closer she came to death; the slower time was moving. Jesus Christ, she thought, is this how it is for everyone? Does everyone die in this nightmarish way? Wait! Nightmarish! Sarah felt a sigh of relief as her head began slowly caving in under the pressure of the truck. She remembered now! She’d had this nightmare before! It was all just a dream! Except it wasn’t. She was stuck in some kind of loop, and all the she had to do to break it was to not go outside again that day. If she didn’t leave the house then she wouldn’t get hit by the truck. She was going to be okay!

———-

Jess woke up to the feeling of something damp. And there was a smell. Was that…urine? “Sarah! Wake up! Have you fucking pissed yourself?” She reached across Sarah to turn on the table lamp. As the room lit up, what she saw, mere inches from her face, was enough to make her scream in horror. She jumped out of bed and ran to the corner. “Sarah!” She shrieked. Laying on the bed was Sarah. Her lifeless body was crushed and mangled, barely recognisable as all of her facial features had been crushed into a pulp.

“…Why won’t I die…?” Sarah thought to herself miserably as she stared up at the ceiling, unable to move, listening to the sound of her girlfriend crying.
